Is Child Baptism Necessary?
By your servant, Dan Baxley
Just when you think a certain doctrine has been exposed and put to rest it pops up again in a different form. Well, not a different from, more from an unexpected source.
Baptizing babies, really? If you are going to baptize “children” then why not babies. A child will do just about anything a parent will tell them to do, the truly rebellious years usually come along later. In most practicing, religious families this is certainly true.
I recently read a fine article/study on this very question. Titled; The Risk of Not Baptizing Your Children, by? Don’t really know, it was a study I came across at www.songsforyahweh.com, under “Articles”. One thing is for certain, the author is very concerned and convinced “child baptism” is missing from the doctrines of the Evangelical Christians, as well as the Hebrew Roots people and the Sacred Names peoples and groups. The Roman Catholics baptize babies for similar reasons and reasoning give in the article.
I am going to cover only a few points to make a point, and hopefully put this to rest – that is, if it ever bothered you, or not. The following few paragraphs are from the article, which is quit long and detailed but length, remember, and many words does not mean a thing has been proven or is true. Sometimes many words is only a cover, or someone trying so hard to convince themselves that the real truth gets missed.
From the Article, The Risk of Not Baptizing Your Children:
“In most assemblies, children are not being baptized until they are a certain age. This concerns me, because our Savior's name, Yahoshua, has not been applied to them. There is not enough evidence in Yahweh's
word to disprove baptism of children. In fact, I think there is more evidence to baptize them. This is very serious, we are talking about our precious little children.
That is the opening paragraph, a bit of excitement and concern and then a statement about a feeling, not a fact, “…I think…” followed by, “…there is more evidence to baptize them.”
If there were “more evidence” it would be clear and plain to all. Anyone can manipulate verses around and apply different reasoning or false proofs to win an argument. Sometimes the argument is only won in the author’s own mind. Still, I read on and on finding one objection after another.
The killer objection, something I will give you right off the bat is this – we are clearly told that if a person, having once tasted the fruit of the Spirit and turns away that there is no “return” for that person. Listen to the Apostle Paul’s inspired word:
(Heb 6:4-6) For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
Do Children have the true capacity of “repentance”? And if they do, what is it? This is a big problem with baptizing children who have not developed an adult mind yet, children that have not been exposed to the evils and temptations of the world, and have certainly not experience anything to justify a truly “repentant heart” and if children are innocently baptized into a name they may later reject, what then? The possibility of rejection, even as a type of rebellion against the parents is too great to be forcing baptism on a child that has no idea what true baptism or repentance means. The Roman Catholic Church is wrong in this practice because they do not see the “falling away” aspect, or they ignore it. By what we just read, from Paul, millions of Catholic children have been doomed to Hell (in their own view) for turning away from their church and even families and parents. But wait, this would only be in the eyes of men because the truth is many children that have been baptized, many unknowingly, turn away from that baptism and join other churches or groups and are baptized after and awakening followed by “repentance”. There is hope after all. To me, and I know many others, that lesson from the Apostle Paul would be the deal breaker.
So, when does a child become accountable? In YaHshua’s case we have it at the age of 12, and the Jews begin this same time of a child’s life as a responsible adult. I am not all that sure about the age of 12, not really. For our Messiah, the age of 12 sounds good, but isn’t He a special case? Of course He is, He is from the Heavens above and is the Son of the Greatest being ever – words cannot express it – and by this single fact alone it would be a mistake to even consider 12 children of men on a par with Him. Even as old as 12 years of age would not be an appropriate time to be pushing your child under water in the Name of YaHshua, least of all babies.
Really, a child in a Christian family is already covered by the Believer in that family. Never heard that before? Time to clear this up and make this truth known once and for all – not by what I say but by the Word, as originally delivered to the first called.
(1Co 7:14) For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.
What, the children are “holy” if one of the parents is a “believer”? This does not take any interpretation, it means what it says, clear and plain; the children of a married of couple are “clean” and “holy” in the eyes of our Creator. To top it off, both parents do not have to be believers, it could be a split family when it comes to religious belief. All it takes is for one parent to be a repentant, confessor accepting YaHshua as Messiah and Savior and baptized into His Name. The believing parent becomes the covering for the children – unbaptized children.
The article we are discussing puts forward many arguments of “omission” – because it does not say it then the author’s assumptions must be right. However, the simple word from the teachings of the Apostle Paul should be enough to settle this matter, if it is a matter at all. It must be of some sort, after all, the Roman Catholics practice baby baptism.
I am not personally opposed to the christening of a child into their name an family name. This seems like a very nice way of honoring a child into a particular family. But as a confession of faith? Not a baby, not a youth, not any child years away from a fully developed adult mind has the proper intellect to confess YaHshua as their Savior much less “repent” or know what they are “repenting” of and for. Yes, there are exceptions but few and very far between.
I find no reason to go point by point covering the errors of thinking for that flawed study. But, if you want to read it and do that for yourself then here is where you will find it:
This website is interesting and has something to offer. I appreciate many of the songs. They have a large library of songs that use the name of our Savior. I would not say it will be a flavor of music tha everyone will like but it is nice to know someone is doing something in this area and I personally enjoy the songs.
