El or Al, Elohim, or Allah?

There is some studies demonstrating the association of the title Elohim, or El with the Islamic Allah.  Penny Warren has looked into this a great deal and I am presenting some of her material here.  One thing, however, where I find disagreement, and should be addressed, is in the casual assumption the term Elohim is a name, or the Name (Ha Shem) of our Creator.  El, and Elohim are ancient Hebrew, generic terms for God, any god, just as we use the generic term "god".  Too many wrong conclusions arise from this common teaching that Elohim is a name.  Look at it like this, say you have a cat, and there are many cats in your neighborhood, certainly the word, cat, can refer to your cat but it can mean all the cats in the neighborhood also, so you difine your cat by giving it a name.  Yes, the term "cat" is a name of a type of animal, but it is not the name of your cat.  Many treat the term Elohim as a name of their god when in fact it is a reference to but not the name of and this term can and is used to make reference of other, even pagan, gods.

If it is insisted that Elohim and El are names then so be it, but in that case these terms, used as proper names do not in reality, or originally refer to the Creator of all things, but rather to a god the Canaanites once worshiped, the father of Baal.  The god El, according to the record found on the Ugarit stone tablets.  El was seen as the "father of all mankind' and later fell out of favor being discribes as a drunken sloth and his son becoming, then, the more popular god whom the Prophet Elijah of the Scripture did battle.  In El-i Yah's (Elijah) name you can see how the term "El" had already, in his day, been reduced to a generic term and not a name.  His name literally means, "My God (El) is YH (YaH)".  So, we might say Elijah, being interpreted, "My God is YaH".

Keeping this in mind we can continue with Penny Warren's article and see the connection with the two terms, Allah and Elohim and how these two terms are treated as names in in this are actually referring to false gods.  This is not what she is teaching but you will see it.  The value in her article is in the origins of these terms and their use and misuse.

Is the Word Allah Similar to Elohim?

by Penny Warren B.A., M.A., D.D

Has much been written about Elohim?

Godfrey Higgins in his classical book Anacalypsis (V. 1; p. 64-65, 67)gives the etymology of Elohim, originally spelled Aleim. He states the following: "Perhaps there is no word in any language about which more has been written than the word Aleim; or, as modern Jews corruptly call it, Elohim. The root … al, the root of the word Aleim, as a verb or it its verbal form, means to mediate, to interpose for protection, to perserve; and a noun, a mediator, an interposer. In its feminine its has two forms …ale, and … alue. In its plural masculine it makes … alim, in is plural feminine … aleim.

Mr. Higgins points out in his book that many learned men believe that "Al" is derived from Arabic but some disagree with the derivation of Allah. "I beg the reader to observe, that Arabians, from whose language the word al properly comes, have the word for Sun, in feminine, and that for the moon, in the masculine gender; … The word Aleim … has been derived the Arabic word Allah, by many learned men; but Mr. Bellamy says this cannot be admitted; for Hebrew is not the derived, but the primitive language. … The Alah, articulo emphatico alalah (calassio) of Arabians, is evidently the … Al of the Chaldees or Jews…"

Encyclopedia Britannica Micropedia (Vol. 1; p. 250) states the following about Allah. "Etymologically, Allah is probably a contraction of the Arabic al-ilahh, "the God," although the Aramaic Alaha has also been proposed. The origin of the name can be traced to the earliest Semitic writings in which the word for god was Il or El, the latter bring in the Old Testament synonym for Yahweh. Known to Arabs even in pre-Islamic times, Allah is standard Arabic for God And is used by Arab Christians as well as Muslims."
